LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities)

At The East Manchester Academy we are committed to establishing a safe and welcoming environment, where everybody feels comfortable to be themselves.

In addition to having been awarded the Rainbow Flag Award for ‘Outstanding Skilled Teacher’, our pupils have been encouraged to write pledges to stamp out bullying that targets LGBT+ young people. Additionally, our school’s LGBT+ Ambassadors have been working hard to establish a safe and friendly school for our LGBT+ pupils.

Please find some useful websites and information on on this page on whom to contact for advice for LGBT+ young people and their parents/carers.

LGBT+ in the Curriculum

We feel strongly that LGBT+ people should be visible across all curriculum areas rather than only in stand-alone lessons. This approach allows us to empower our LGBT+ pupils as it allows us to celebrate LGBT+ people in different subject areas. In addition to this, it allows for open discourse between staff and students and it ensures that LGBT+ people are fairly represented in school.

Further to LGBT+ people being represented across the curriculum, pupils have discussed LGBT+ issues and celebrated equality during sessions in form time and pupils attended our first pride event during our Spring Super Learning Day. The pride event enabled pupils to meet LGBT+ people from different professions and it allowed them to ask questions and address any misconceptions.

HBT Bullying

Students make their pledges during our Super Learning Day pride event

At TEMA (The East Manchester Academy), we have a strictly zero tolerance approach to HBT (Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic) bullying. We treat HBT bullying extremely seriously and as a result, there will be appropriate consequences for HBT bullying against LGBT+ pupils, staff or families in the local community.

If students experience HBT bullying, they can report it anonymously via our anti-bullying form on our Intranet (frog), speak to one of the anti-bullying or LGBT+ ambassadors in the safe space (the board room on the first floor) at lunch time, or speak to any member of staff wearing the rainbow badges as they have been specifically trained to deal with these issues.

As an inclusive school, we welcome feedback from all of our stakeholders, and we are happy to signpost anybody to appropriate information regarding HBT bullying or coming-out issues. If you have any issues, concerns or questions please contact us via the contact box on this page and we will endeavour to get back to you within 48 hours.
