TEMA Regains the Full Rainbow Flag Award

Published: 13/10/2021

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded The Rainbow Flag Award (September 2021), which is a testament to our commitment for LGBTQ+ inclusion.

As part of our commitment to being an LGBTQ+ inclusive school, we have been working on The Proud Trust’s Rainbow Flag Award during the past academic year.

Whilst participating in this award, staff have been fully trained to support LGBTQ+ students and their families. Additionally, we have established an LGBTQ+ Student Ambassadors group where students can share their ideas on how to celebrate and support our LGBTQ+ community.

In order to ensure that our curriculum is inclusive to LGBTQ+ people, staff at TEMA have enthusiastically celebrated successful LGBTQ+ people from their academic disciplines by including them in their lessons throughout the year. Speaking about our inclusion of LGBTQ+ people into our curriculum, The Proud Trust stated:

It is clear from the evidence you have submitted that a variety of LGBT+ icons and identities have been shared and represented across a variety of subjects. We particularly like the lessons that have just been tweaked so there is a sprinkling of LGBT+ representation, making discussing LGBT+ people a part of usual, everyday conversation.
The Proud Trust

As part of the award, TEMA has also demonstrated a commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ students and staff in the following areas:

  1. Skilled Teachers
  2. Supportive Governors & Parents
  3. Effective Policies
  4. Inclusive Curriculum
  5. Pastoral Support
  6. Pupil Voice

The Proud Trust were particularly impressed with our Student LGBTQ+ Ambassadors and the work that they have produced in such a short amount of time, stating:

The work led and produced by your LGBT+ Ambassadors is fantastic. It is clear that they are focussed and engaged in their work, and I’m sure you recognise how their insight is so useful to you as they will be able to highlight barriers that LGBT+ young people are facing and the changes that could be made in school to improve the experiences of LGBT+ young people.
The Proud Trust

Staff at TEMA are excited to continue working alongside our student LGBTQ+ Ambassadors over the course of this year in order to continue celebrating LGBTQ+ people and ensuring that TEMA remains a welcoming place for all.
