First Aid Training with StreetDoctors ( Published: 04/11/2026)
Year 8 pupils swapped their usual classroom lessons for a practical, hands-on workshop led by the national youth charity, StreetDoctors.
The visiting team of healthcare volunteers spent the day delivering interactive emergency first aid sessions. The training focused directly on empowering young people with the skills and confidence to react quickly during a medical emergency, particularly when dealing with high-risk injuries such as severe bleeding and stab wounds.
Practical Skills for Emergency Situations
Rather than relying on lectures, the sessions took a hands-on approach. Students were guided through realistic scenarios to help them stay calm, act safely, and administer effective care before paramedics arrive.
Key skills covered during the workshops included:
- Recognising Severe Bleeding: Identifying critical injuries quickly and assessing the urgency of the situation
- Applying Direct Pressure: Practicing how to apply firm, immediate pressure using bandages or everyday materials to control blood loss
- Managing Emergency Calls: Learning how to communicate clearly with 999 call handlers to provide precise location details and vital updates on the casualty
- Reassuring Casualties: Keeping an injured person calm and supported while waiting for emergency services
Building Confidence and Community Safety
StreetDoctors works with schools and youth groups across the country, training young people to become potential life-savers in their local communities. By teaching practical emergency medicine in an accessible way, the charity aims to demystify first aid and equip teenagers with practical skills that can make all the difference in a crisis.
Year 8 pupils engaged brilliantly throughout the workshops, showing impressive maturity, asking thoughtful questions, and participating fully in the practical exercises. A huge thank you to the StreetDoctors team for visiting the academy and sharing such vital knowledge with our students.
