Empowering the Future: International Women’s Day at TEMA ( Published: 09/03/2026)
This year was particularly special, as the celebrations were driven entirely by the passion and leadership of our Informed Citizens Reading Group. From digital storytelling to school-wide pledges, here is how our students made their voices heard:
Student-Led Storytelling
The Informed Citizens took on the role of digital journalists, producing a series of powerful videos shown during form time throughout the week. The group interviewed both staff and students, posing two vital questions:
- What does it mean to be a woman in today’s world?
- What do you hope to see for women in the future?
These interviews sparked meaningful classroom discussions, highlighting the diverse perspectives within our academy and the shared hope for a world where opportunities are limitless for everyone, regardless of gender.
Pledging for Change
Beyond the screen, the group launched a hands-on campaign for Gender Equality. Students were invited to sign formal pledges, committing themselves to challenge stereotypes and support equity.
As a symbol of their commitment, every student who signed a pledge was given a purple badge or ribbon to wear on their blazer. It has been an inspiring sight to see a ‘sea of purple’ across our corridors, serving as a constant reminder of our school’s values.
A Special Visit: Lucy Powell MP
The week’s celebrations culminated on Friday 6th March 2026, during a whole-school visit from Lucy Powell MP.
As a prominent female leader in our community, it was an honour to welcome her to the academy. She spent time discussing the gender equality pledges with our students and was eager to show her support by wearing her own purple badge.
We were incredibly proud to share a space with such an influential woman. Seeing her engage with our student-led projects gave the group a real sense of achievement.

Looking Ahead
International Women’s Day at TEMA wasn’t just about a single week; it was about fostering an environment where every student feels empowered to lead. A huge thank you goes out to the Informed Citizens for their hard work and to all students who wore their purple ribbons with pride.
