Post 16 Transition – A Family Guide ( Published: 19/06/2026)
How to support your child’s transition to college, sixth form or employment.
Supporting your child into their next steps after school, and into becoming a young adult, is a key time for parents and carers. Whilst your child will start to take on many adult responsibilities after the age of sixteen – you can support them by regularly checking in.
Young people often need help with the life admin that we take for granted as adults. You can help them with tasks such as completing forms, replying to emails and planning out key dates on a calendar.
What Next?
- Your child should have received enrolment information from the colleges and sixth forms they have applied to. This will have been sent to them by email on the address they used when they applied
- College and sixth form enrolment takes place in person after GCSE results day. If your child will not be in the country, then you must inform the college/sixth form in advance or they will lose their place. Colleges and sixth forms in Manchester are oversubscribed, it is unlikely that many will have places after enrolment takes place
- If your child is hoping to start an apprenticeship but does not yet have one secured, you can find information and apply for opportunities here: www.apprenticeships.gov.uk. Your child can still enrol at college and continue to look for an apprenticeship
