Proud To Read at TEMA ( Published: 16/09/2024)
At TEMA we are proud to read because we know reading will help us to develop our knowledge, our understanding of the world, our wellbeing and our empathy. We also know that improving reading is key to our students’ academic success. We are committed to equipping students with this vital skill for their future.
Over the summer, students at TEMA have participated in a wide range of exciting events and activities to develop their reading skills and vocabulary knowledge.
In July, a group of Year 8 students took part in peer reader training at Manchester’s Central Library. For the new school year, these students will join our group of dedicated Reading Leaders in supporting younger students with their reading and promoting the wide-ranging benefits of reading.
In addition to this, during the final half term, hundreds of Key Stage 3 students competed for a place in our annual Spelling Bee. An incredibly ambitious and talented twenty-four then took part in the final before the winners were announced. David in Year 10 said:
I loved the event. It was something I had wanted to be part of for a long time. Even though different years competed, we were all able to find new and challenging vocabulary. The final word was really tough (acquiesce)! I am already looking forward to next year’s event.
Finally, the Summer Reading Challenge was a chance for students to read, review and recommend reading material for our community. We have been really impressed by the students embarking on this challenge during their holiday and have enjoyed celebrating their success with them. Mildred in Year 10 said:
I found the books interesting and inspiring because they all had one thing in common: achieving your dreams. I have learned that we can overcome any challenge with hard work.
Now, the children have begun their first TEMA Read for the year and have received their home learning booklet for the first half term. These items are an important part of our students’ daily equipment and they are carried with pride.
