TEMA celebrates European Day of Languages ( Published: 04/11/2025)
As part of our commitment to promoting global citizenship and celebrating the richness of languages, The East Manchester Academy hosted a series of exciting events for European Day of Languages.
Mr Eyres, Head of MFL, delivered assemblies to all year groups, highlighting the benefits of language learning and the diversity it brings. The assemblies explored the evolution of the English language and how it has been shaped and enriched by other cultures and languages over time.
Staff across the academy took part in a treasure hunt competition, proudly displaying their favourite phrases in other languages alongside images of countries they admire. Students were challenged to find as many as possible, with Sami (9G1) emerging as the winner in a closely contested race.
A poster competition also invited students to showcase cultural celebrations from around the world. Each entry highlighted a unique festival or tradition, encouraging exploration of new languages and global connections. The winning poster, created by Antonia (7X1), beautifully depicted Día de los Muertos and impressed judges with its creativity and cultural insight.
During progress time, students participated in a languages-themed quiz, testing their knowledge of global cultures and linguistic facts. A highlight was the final challenge: pronouncing the famously long Welsh town name:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
– a fun and memorable moment for all!
To further promote language learning, students were invited to apply for the role of Language Leaders. These students will champion languages and cultural awareness across the school. Our Senior Language Leaders played a key role in selecting and mentoring the new team, who will help organise future events.
In Spanish lessons, students in Years 7–9 created their own Language Passports, proudly sharing their heritage, the languages spoken at home, and those they aspire to learn. This activity celebrated the rich linguistic diversity within our school community and encouraged students to value their multilingual identities.
We’re proud of how our students embraced the European Day of Languages. Their enthusiasm for exploring new cultures and languages reflects the inclusive spirit of our school.
Mr Eyres, Head of Modern Foreign Languages
